An evening in Pune taught me why the city loves its cafés so much

by Streamline

I had learned quite a lot about the pleasant climate in Pune, education and culture in the city. I knew quite a little about cafés in the city. I thought they only provided a chance to sip coffee in between touring the city. But one night was enough to break this misconception of mine.

Having toured the entire city during the day, instead of rushing back after that, I wandered the lanes of the city neighbourhoods, got into a cafe and spent a considerable amount of leisurely time watching the city in the evening. It was now clear to me how important the cafes are in this city.

Pune’s cafés felt like extensions of the neighbourhood

The first impression that came to my mind was that nobody was in a hurry. Some were reading books, others were using their laptops, whereas groups of friends were having lengthy conversations with a cup of coffee in hand.

Contrary to other cafés located in metropolitan cities where people usually come just to buy a drink and go, here the pace of life was relatively slow. Here, people actually conversed without hurry.

Walking between Pune’s cafés became part of the experience

Rather than sticking to one area, I walked around some streets that were home to cafes, bakeries, and other small eateries. Some cafés were housed in renovated historic buildings, whereas others had modern interiors bathed in sunlight.

In fact, walking around town became as enjoyable an experience as visiting cafes themselves. They did not feel crowded, and you could always discover a new place down the street.

Every Pune café had its own environment

Although coffee was the common thread, each café offered a different experience. Some were filled with students discussing assignments, while others attracted professionals winding down after work. There were also quieter corners where visitors simply enjoyed a book or watched the evening pass by.

I found myself lingering much longer than I had planned. Rather than feeling like time was slipping away, it felt like the city encouraged people to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Staying nearby made spontaneous evenings easy in Pune

Choosing one of the hotels in Pune close to popular neighbourhoods made it easy to experience the city after sunset. Instead of worrying about a long journey back, I could wander through nearby streets, stop wherever a café looked interesting, and return whenever I felt ready.

That flexibility turned an ordinary evening into one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Sometimes the best experiences happen when there is no fixed schedule to follow.

It wasn’t just about the coffee in Pune

While the coffee tasted good, what lingered in my mind was the environment in which it was enjoyed. People engaged in conversations effortlessly, returned to their tables, and felt at ease regardless of how long they stayed.

These cafes captured a different side of Pune, where there was space for people to relax, read books, socialise with friends, and work, among other things.

Pune’s evening ended more slowly than it began

As daylight gradually faded, the cafés became warmer and more inviting. Soft conversations replaced the afternoon bustle, and the streets outside continued to buzz gently without becoming hectic.

Walking back to my accommodation, I realised that I had learned more about Pune during those relaxed hours than I had through any guidebook. The city’s personality revealed itself through everyday routines rather than famous landmarks.

Final thoughts

Even before coming to Pune, I had not anticipated how enjoyable my visit to the city’s cafés would be. But a couple of hours of exploration allowed me to get an insight into the city which would not be possible with only sightseeing.

Surely, Pune does have its share of famous spots, but spending an evening trying out the café culture here can also be enjoyable. The best thing about Pune is that hotels are situated in places which allow you to explore the cafés easily.
